When the Sniffles Keep Coming Back and You Just Want to Know What’s Normal

It often starts with a runny nose or a little cough after preschool. Then another cold follows before the first one fully clears. For many parents, it can feel like a cycle that never ends. At Joyful Seeds Paediatric & Development Clinic in Bukit Timah, we understand how exhausting it can be to see your child unwell again and again, even when you know it is part of growing up.

Common colds are one of the most frequent reasons children visit the clinic. They are rarely serious, but that does not make them feel any less overwhelming when your child is tired, clingy or coughing through the night. We are here to help you understand what is typical, what to watch for and how to care for your child gently through each episode.

What Causes the Common Cold

The common cold is caused by a group of viruses that affect the nose, throat and upper airways. Children, especially those under five, can catch colds often—sometimes as many as eight to ten times a year. Their immune systems are still developing, and they are often exposed to new viruses at preschool, playgrounds or daycare.

The cold virus spreads easily through sneezing, coughing or touching shared surfaces. While it is uncomfortable, it usually resolves on its own with rest and home care.

What You Might Notice in Your Child

Every cold can look a little different, and symptoms often come in waves. Some common signs include:

  • A runny or stuffy nose

  • Sneezing and mild coughing

  • A low-grade fever, especially in the early days

  • Watery eyes or slight throat discomfort

  • Fussiness, tiredness or changes in sleep and feeding

  • Post-nasal drip or coughing more at night

Symptoms may last about a week, though some coughs or congestion can linger a bit longer. In most cases, your child will remain active, eating and drinking as usual. If you notice your child is less responsive or more distressed than usual, it may be time for a closer look.

How We Support Families at Joyful Seeds

At Joyful Seeds Paediatric & Development Clinic, we know that no cold is ever “just a cold” when you are the one caring for a sick child. Whether it is your first time navigating a viral illness or the fifth cold in as many months, we are here to provide guidance and reassurance without judgement.

  • Take a gentle history of your child’s symptoms and recent exposure

  • Examine their ears, throat, lungs and nose

  • Provide guidance on home care, including hydration and symptom relief

  • Recommend child-safe medications for fever or nasal congestion if needed

  • Share tips for managing coughs and improving sleep during recovery

  • Discuss when to return for review or if symptoms change

Dr Charmaine Teo and Dr Martha Liu bring years of experience in both general paediatrics and developmental care. They understand how recurrent illnesses can impact not only your child, but your family’s rhythm and peace of mind.

When to Be Concerned

While most colds resolve without medical treatment, some signs may point to something more. We encourage you to seek care if your child:

  • Has a fever that lasts more than three days

  • Develops fast, noisy or difficult breathing

  • Is very lethargic or refuses food and fluids

  • Has ear pain or persistent coughing

  • Appears to be getting worse rather than better after several days

We are always here to offer a second look when you are unsure. You do not have to make those calls alone.

Building Resilience with Each Cold

As tiring as it may feel, every cold helps your child’s immune system learn and grow stronger. Over time, many children begin to fall sick less often and bounce back more quickly. At Joyful Seeds, we support families not only through the illness but through the in-between moments, the worries, the questions, and the desire to do your best.

We also help you plan for school, travel and seasonal changes with confidence, so you can feel prepared no matter what comes next.
