When Loose Stools Disrupt the Day

You notice a sudden change in your child’s nappies or toilet visits. There may be more urgency, more mess, and more worry than usual. It can be hard to tell if it is just something passing through or something that needs attention. At Joyful Seeds Paediatric & Development Clinic in Bukit Timah, we are here to help you find clarity and comfort when your child is unwell.

Diarrhoea is one of the most common symptoms in childhood. It often comes with viral infections, changes in diet or responses to medication. While most children recover well with rest and fluids, it is important to monitor for signs that may need medical review.

What Is Diarrhoea

Diarrhoea is when a child passes stools that are watery, loose or more frequent than usual. In children, this may be linked to:

  • Viral infections such as rotavirus

  • Bacterial or food-related infections

  • Sudden changes in diet or new foods

  • Sensitivities or reactions to medication

  • Stress or illness-related digestive changes

The main concern with diarrhoea is the loss of fluids and salts, which can affect a child’s energy and hydration. With the right care, children usually recover within a few days.

What You Might Notice

The signs of diarrhoea may vary depending on your child’s age. Here are a few things to look for:

Frequent, Loose Stools

Your child may need to use the toilet more often or have multiple wet nappies. The stools may be watery, and some children may feel discomfort before passing motion.

Changes in Mood or Appetite

A child with diarrhoea may be tired, quieter than usual or less interested in food. Some may show signs of tummy cramping or want to rest more often.

Signs of Dehydration

You may notice a dry mouth, sunken eyes or fewer wet nappies. Some children drink less or may not be able to keep fluids down. These are signs that a doctor’s review is needed.

How We Support Your Child at Joyful Seeds

At Joyful Seeds Paediatric & Development Clinic, we create a calm, safe space for your child to be cared for when unwell. We begin with listening, both to your concerns and to your child’s symptoms.

During your visit, care may include:

  • A review of the diarrhoea pattern, recent meals, exposures or travel

  • A physical check to assess hydration, temperature and abdominal comfort

  • Stool tests if symptoms continue or there are signs of infection

  • Clear guidance on hydration, feeding and rest

  • Safe medication when needed, based on your child’s age and condition

  • Advice on when to return to preschool or childcare

Dr Charmaine Teo and Dr Martha Liu will walk you through the recovery process with clear explanations and reassuring support, helping you care for your child with confidence.

Supporting You at Home

It can be unsettling to see your child weak, uncomfortable or not quite themselves. We are here to guide you through these moments, helping you feel less alone and more prepared. We offer clear instructions on what to watch for, how to keep your child comfortable, and when to check back in if things are not improving.

Sometimes, a simple change in fluid intake and feeding can make all the difference. We help you understand these steps and adjust them based on your child’s needs.
