When Something Around the Belly Button Does Not Look Quite Right
In those early weeks of caring for your baby, every little change can feel significant, especially around the belly button. You may notice redness, a bit of discharge, or something that looks like a small lump. At Joyful Seeds Paediatric & Development Clinic in Bukit Timah, we understand how common these concerns are for parents. We are here to gently guide you through what is normal, what needs closer attention, and how to care for your baby with confidence.
Most umbilical issues are minor and resolve with time and gentle care. But it is natural to feel uncertain, especially when your baby is still so small and new to the world. You are not alone, and we are here to help.
What Are Umbilical Issues and Why They Occur
After birth, the umbilical cord is clamped and cut, leaving a small stump that usually dries and falls off within one to two weeks. During this period, and sometimes even after the stump falls off, parents may notice:
Slight bleeding or yellowish discharge
A small fleshy lump or moist area that does not dry up
Swelling or bulging near the belly button
A pink or reddish area that seems to stay damp
These can all be part of common umbilical conditions such as:
Umbilical granuloma: a small overgrowth of tissue after the stump falls off
Umbilical hernia: a soft bulge at the belly button that becomes more visible during crying or straining
Mild umbilical infection: redness or discharge around the stump area
Delayed cord separation: when the stump takes longer than usual to fall off
Most of these are harmless and treatable. The key is knowing when to observe and when to seek care.
