When Your Child Bumps Their Head and You Are Unsure What to Do Next
A loud cry, a fall from the bed or a knock during play, head bumps can happen in an instant. Even when your child seems fine afterwards, it is natural to worry. At Joyful Seeds Paediatric & Development Clinic in Bukit Timah, we understand how distressing these moments can be for families. Our role is to help you feel calm, informed and supported as your child recovers.
Minor head injuries are common in children, especially as they learn to walk, climb and explore. Most are not serious and resolve with rest and observation. Still, knowing what to watch for and when to seek help makes all the difference.
What Is a Minor Head Injury
A minor head injury refers to a bump, bruise or mild impact to the head that does not cause unconsciousness or major neurological symptoms. Common causes include:
Falls from low heights (like beds or sofas)
Bumping into furniture or walls
Accidental hits during play or sports
Objects falling on the head
Young children are especially prone due to their growing coordination, higher centre of gravity and curiosity about movement.
What You Might Notice
Children with a minor head injury may cry at first but settle soon after with comfort. However, certain signs can help guide what’s normal and what may need closer attention.
Immediate Cry Followed by Calm
Your child may cry right after the bump but gradually settle within 10 to 15 minutes. They may return to play or become sleepy as part of their usual routine.
Small Bumps or Bruises
A bump or swelling (often called a “goose egg”) may appear on the forehead or scalp. Bruising is also common and usually improves over several days.
Slight Irritability or Sleepiness
Your child might be more clingy or tired than usual. This is often a normal reaction to the event, but should still be monitored.
