Understanding Your Child’s Heart Rhythm

A child’s heartbeat can tell us so much about their health. If your child has been experiencing palpitations, chest discomfort, fainting spells or unexplained tiredness, an ECG can offer valuable insight. At Joyful Seeds Paediatric & Development Clinic in Bukit Timah, we provide in-clinic electrocardiogram (ECG) services that are safe, quick and thoughtfully explained.

With the care of Dr Charmaine Teo and Dr Martha Liu, families can feel reassured that every step is handled with clarity and compassion.

What Is an ECG?

Electrocardiogram (ECG) is a non-invasive test that records the electrical activity of your child’s heart. Small, soft electrodes are placed on the chest and limbs to monitor the heartbeat. The process is painless and takes only a few minutes.

This simple test can help identify:

  • Irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias)

  • Signs of heart inflammation or structural differences

  • Effects of certain medications on the heart

  • Underlying causes of fainting or chest pain

For some children, an ECG provides peace of mind. For others, it can help guide further care or follow-up testing if needed.

When Your Child May Need an ECG

Your doctor may recommend an ECG if your child is showing any of the following:

  • Irregular or fast heartbeats

You may notice your child’s heart pounding suddenly or skipping beats, even at rest.

  • Chest discomfort or tightness

Children may describe this as a “funny feeling” in the chest, especially during or after physical activity.

  • Dizziness or fainting spells

Fainting that is unexplained, especially during exercise, should be evaluated carefully.

  • Unusual fatigue

If your child is much more tired than usual or struggles with physical activity, a heart rhythm check may be helpful.

  • Family history of heart conditions

If there is a history of heart issues in the family, early screening may be recommended to ensure all is well.

While these symptoms may not always point to a heart problem, an ECG helps us take a closer look in a safe and reassuring way.

What to Expect During the ECG

Your visit will begin with a consultation to understand your child’s symptoms, medical history and activity patterns. If an ECG is needed, we’ll guide you through what to expect with warmth and clarity.

Here’s how the process works:

  • Your child lies down comfortably on the examination bed

  • A few soft stickers (electrodes) are placed on their chest, arms and legs

  • The ECG machine records the heartbeat over a short period

  • The entire test usually takes less than 10 minutes

  • The results are reviewed by our doctors and shared with you in clear terms

Most children tolerate the procedure well, and we always take care to ensure they feel settled and supported.

Why Parents Feel Reassured

When it comes to a child’s heart, every concern feels important. At Joyful Seeds, we approach these concerns with attentiveness and respect. Our ECG service is designed to be informative and comforting, helping parents better understand what is going on—without unnecessary stress.

Families have shared how much they value:

  • The clarity and patience shown during the explanation

  • How the procedure was done with care, not urgency

  • The reassurance of having experienced paediatricians guide them

  • A supportive environment where no question feels too small

For many, the ECG is less about the test itself and more about gaining insight and peace of mind.

Gentle Heart Checks That Make a Difference

If your child has been feeling off, showing signs of dizziness or simply not their usual self, an ECG may offer helpful answers. With the right support, something that once felt worrying can turn into a moment of reassurance and clarity.
