Finding Clarity Through Thoughtful Testing

When your child isn’t feeling well, every unknown can feel a little heavier. Whether it’s a persistent fever, tummy aches that don’t go away or symptoms that just don’t quite make sense, simple tests can offer the clarity you need to understand what is going on.

At Joyful Seeds Paediatric & Development Clinic in Bukit Timah, we offer in-clinic blood and urine testing, as well as nasal swab collection, in a calm and child-friendly space. With the warm, experienced care of Dr Charmaine Teo and Dr Martha Liu, our aim is always to guide your family gently through uncertainty,  one step, one answer at a time.

What These Tests Can Tell Us

  • Blood Tests

These help us check for signs of infection, anaemia, inflammation or nutritional concerns. A small sample is collected using a finger prick or arm vein, depending on your child’s age and the type of test required.

  • Urine Tests

Urine tests can help us understand if there is a urinary tract infection (UTI), dehydration or other issues affecting kidney function. We’ll guide you on how to collect the sample, with age-appropriate support throughout.

  • Nasal Swab

A soft swab is used to collect a sample from the nose, usually to check for viral infections such as influenza, COVID-19 or RSV. The process is brief and well tolerated by most children with some simple distraction or comfort techniques.

These tests are quick, safe and meaningful. They help us get to the heart of what your child is experiencing so we can provide the most appropriate care.

When Testing Might Be Needed

You may be encouraged to consider these tests if your child is experiencing:

  • Persistent fever or illness

When a fever lasts beyond a few days or keeps cominback, testing can help uncover possible infections or causes.

  • Discomfort when urinating or unusual toileting patterns

Urine tests can detect UTIs, which are common in children but can be difficult to spot in the early stages.

  • Unexplained tiredness or paleness

These may point to anaemia or other conditions that require a closer look at your child’s blood levels.

  • Cold or flu-like symptoms

Nasal swabs help identify common viral infections and guide the next steps in care.

  • Part of a wider investigation

Sometimes, tests are done as part of an overall health check or to monitor progress during treatment.

We always take time to explain why a test is suggested, and never rush the decision. You’ll feel supported, every step of the way.

What to Expect at Joyful Seeds

From the moment you walk in, our team is focused on helping your child feel safe and seen. Before any test begins, we take the time to listen to your concerns, assess your child’s symptoms and explain what each test involves.

Here’s what your visit may include:

  • A clear, simple explanation of what the test is for

  • Child-sensitive preparation to ease fear or anxiety

  • Guidance on collecting urine samples comfortably and respectfully

  • Supportive distraction and comfort techniques for swabs or pricks

  • Time for questions and space to settle afterwards

  • Gentle handling and fast sample processing to avoid long waits

We understand that no child enjoys tests, but with care and calm, we help the process feel far less daunting.

Why Families Trust Us for Testing

Medical tests can feel like a big step, especially when your child is already unwell. But families who visit us often share how relieved they feel—because of how the care was given.

They tell us:

  • “It was done with so much patience and kindness”

  • “Everything was explained so clearly, I didn’t feel overwhelmed”

  • “The doctors made my child feel calm, even during the test”

For us, it’s never just about collecting samples. It’s about caring for the whole family through moments of uncertainty.

A Path Toward Answers and Ease

Whether it’s a suspected infection, a hidden cause of tiredness or a virus that needs to be identified, small tests can lead to big relief. They help us understand what’s happening beneath the surface, and support your child’s return to comfort and health.
